About Clarfiys

Wood chess sets, with a case to match.

Clarfiys is a small, independent U.S. shop with one focus: complete wooden chess sets that store themselves. Every set we carry pairs weighted, felted Staunton pieces with a hardwood two-drawer case whose lid is the playing board – so the set lives on a shelf or a table, ready for a game, instead of in a bag at the back of a closet.

Why a case?

A folding board wears at the hinge, loose pieces go missing, and a bag of chessmen is not something you leave out. A two-drawer case solves all three at once: the board is a solid, flat surface; each side has its own fitted drawer; and the whole thing reads as a piece of furniture. It is the only kind of set we sell.

What we carry

Tournament Standard & German Knight – the patterns you see in club and tournament halls, built for play.
French Lardy – a slender, classic club design from the mid-twentieth century.
Parker – a full-size 3.75″ king with a sculpted knight, paired with figured elm burl and bird’s-eye maple.
Zagreb Series – the 1959 Candidates Tournament silhouette, a favorite of collectors.

Choosing a size

King height sets the scale of everything else. A 3.25″ king suits a desk or coffee table; a 3.5″–3.75″ king is the full tournament size, most at home on a dining table or a dedicated chess table. All our cases are matched to their pieces, so you never have to check the ratio yourself.

Woods

Boxwood is the light side in every set. The dark side is either ebonized boxwood (stained to a deep black), golden rosewood, or walnut-stained hardwood. Cases come in walnut, black with bird’s-eye maple, or elm burl with bird’s-eye maple. Natural grain and color vary from set to set – the photographs are representative.

Care

Wipe pieces and board with a dry, soft cloth. Keep the set away from direct sun, radiators and damp rooms; wood moves with humidity, and a stable room keeps drawers sliding smoothly for decades. Never use household cleaners on the finish.
